Date Night Ideas:
Infant Costume Ideas from Shelly:
Use your gear. Turn your stroller or wagon into a racecar with a cardboard box and dress your baby with some sunglasses and a jacket covered with endorsement logos. Or turn it into a giant flower pot and dress your baby as the flower. If you are going to carry your baby in a carrier you wear, dress him as a superhero in flight. Or attach a large circle of colored posterboard or felt to his chest and a thick white rope hanging from it to be an irresistible lollipop.
Use a purchased hooded sweatshirt and matching pants and dress it up. Here a loads of things you can do with different colors of hooded sweatshirts.
(Some of these costumes would be even better with mittens. If you can’t buy them in the right color, buy some colored socks and cut a hole in it for the thumb to stick out. Or you can make some easily: Sew knit fabric into a sock shape to cover hands. Cut a hole for the thumb to stick out on one side. Perfection in the project is NOT required! Your child might comply with wearing them more if you also cut a hole for their pinky to stick out. I stuff padding in to the fingers for some costumes to more closely resemble animal feet, and it provides even more warmth.)
WHITE HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Bunny — Attach a large pink oval to the tummy and white ears with pink undersides to the hood. Wear white mittens.
Cow — Attach a tan colored glove (stuffed with cotton) to the tummy and small ears to the hood. Cover the whole thing with odd shaped spots. Wear black mittens.
Elvis — Cut off the top half of the hood but leave enough to fold down a large pointy collar. Glue on an obnoxious amount of colored jewels. Tie on a sheer scarf.
Football player — Attach your favorite team’s colors or motifs to the hood for a “helmet.” Purchase another t-shirt in the appropriate color and attach a large number to the front. Add trim to hems of t-shirt with felt, ribbon, or bias tape. You could even stick some extra padding into the sweatshirt and it would provide more warmth.
PINK HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Pig — Attach pointy ears to hood. Make a twisty tail from four pink pipe cleaners twisted together. Make a pig nose with a pink felt circle and two small black ovals. Attach to top of hood over forehead. Make it a “Piglet” costume, but purchasing a dark pink shirt, removing the sleeves and drawing black horizontal lines on it with a permanent marker.
YELLOW HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Winnie the Pooh — Attach matching ears to hood and wear matching mittens. Purchase a red over-sized T-shirt and cut off the bottom to make it shorter. Use craft dimensional paint to write “POOH” on the front. Wear matching mittens.
Lion — Attach fur trim to front edge of hood. Lots of it! Wear matching mittens.
BLACK HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Spider — Attach 6 legs made of felt or string. Attach them all together with threads and to the babies sleeves so they move out when the babies arms move out (making a total of 8 “legs”). Mom can be a spider web. Wear a white sweatsuit with web strings hanging from arms.
Butterfly — Attach purchased wings to back and antennae to hood.
ORANGE HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Tigger — Attach large white oval to tummy. Draw black stripes with black marker on back, sides and hood (or glue on felt pieces). Be sure stripes overlap onto the white oval. Wear matching mittens.
Pumpkin — Attach felt pieces for jack-o-lantern face and green leaves or stem to hood.
Flower — Make flower petals out of felt and sew or glue around the collar. Add leaves or petals around the leggings or tops of sock also, and carry a watering canister as your trick or treat bag. Wear green mittens with large felt leaves covering the top of hands.
BROWN HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Dog — Attach droopy ears of felt. Add random spots. Use face paint to put one spot over one eye. Attach a long tail to the back of the sweatshirt. Wear matching mittens with spots.
Kangaroo and Joey — Mom gets a huge brown sweatshirt and cut a hole in it for the baby to poke out of your baby wearing pack. Add a long triangular tail to the back for mom and ears to the hood. A light brown oval for the tummy.
Mr. Potato Head – remove the sleeves of an oversized brown sweatshirt. Wear a long sleeved white shirt underneath. Stuff it with extra clothing or padding. Cut mouth, eyes, nose and black mustache from felt. Attach with stitches or safety pins. Wear white gloves or mittens,
GREY HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Mouse — Use stiff felt to attach circular ears. Cup them slightly to help them stand up. Attach a large pink oval to the tummy. Use a black or grey rope attached to the bottom edge of sweatshirt back for a tail. Wear grey mittens.
GREEN HOODED SWEATSHIRT:
Dinosaur — Attach white felt teeth to top of hood over forehead. Add yellow felt spots to back and hood and a large yellow oval to tummy. Attach three triangles to tips of matching mittens for claws. Attach a very large and long green triangle covered with more yellow spots to bottom edge of sweatshirt back.
