Keeping Toddlers Active in Winter Rae Pica of www.movingandlearning.com and author of 17 books and consults with organizations like Sesame Street, Headstart, the CDC, Blue’s Clues, and Gymboree.
Set aside time every day for active indoor play. Make sure there’s someplace where you and your child can safely move – where knickknacks and sharp corners aren’t a concern.
- Put on a lively march, or break out the pots and pans, and hold a lively march around the house.
- Put on some music and dance – or play Statues.
- Set up an obstacle course using furniture, empty boxes, a jump rope, etc.
- Play Follow the Leader, or Shadow.
- Play the Mirror Game; make it active.
- Play Catch Me If You Can.
Bundle up and go outside! Important not to give children the idea that they can’t go out just because it’s cold!
- Take a walk.
- Play in the snow: building snow people, making snowballs, making angels.
- Play some of the above games: Follow the Leader, Catch Me if You Can.
- Catch falling snow on mittens or tongue!
- Give toddler a child-sized shovel so s/he can “help” with the driveway or walk.
Join a program like Gymboree or KinderMusik, which you can attend at least once a week.
Buy activity-oriented, rather than sedentary, toys, games, and gifts that will allow your child to be active on his/her own.

- Pull toys
- CDs with lively music to dance to
- Chiffon scarves to catch
- Balls of various sizes
- A toddler tricycle

Pink Bench HeadBand–This is really for Mom and maybe for daughter if she has a larger head. This headband is light and stays in place. If you have a mane of hair that needs to be kept back, try one. No pain and stays in place!
Funkie Bibs–Since you have to use one everyday, why not use something fun. These are cute and they still work. They wash up and save the clothes. And they can even be reversed so you get twice the bib!
BabyLegs Leg Warmers–No joke. These are back in style but they are cuter than they used to be. This is not Flash Dance–but something cute and useful. You can keep baby’s legs warm.
