We talk about Work/Life Balance with a woman actually making it happen–Kim Kleeman, Founder and CEO of Shakespeare Squared. Kim is known not only for her tremendous success as a young entrepreneur in the educational publishing industry, but also as a business leader and mother who advocates work/life balance for herself and her staff. Her company is featured on www.babiesatwork.org and was named a Working Mother 25 Best Small Companies in 2007.
Kim’s belief is that life is more than work: “It has always been my belief that it is possible to fulfill my professional goals in the education world while simultaneously preserving relationships with my family, with my staff, and with my friends. Our company has grown more than 800% over the last three years and continues to grow bigger and faster. To me, all this success means nothing unless I can share it with the people that mean the most.” (more…)

Nancy reports from her FIRST family vacation. She’s at the beach with her kids and husband. Learn what works well and what doesn’t and save yourself the headaches when you go to the beach.
Products Nancy Loved While There:
Other tips Arthur and Nancy give from their trip:
- Get a house instead of a hotel so you have a place as a base where kids can eat breakfast, lunch and take naps (well worth the extra cost because you save on not eating out as often).
- Be prepared to take a lot of stuff with you to help your child feel comfortable (car seat, portable bed, lovies, food and so forth).
- Use the GoGo Babyz Travelmate to get your carseat through the airport (Anna really felt better sitting in her car seat on the plane–well worth taking it on).
- Practice sleeping in the Pack N Play before you go (or in a bed if that is what will happen.
- Practice using the equipment you take with you (we did not practice the sun cover and it was a sore spot one day).
- Find kid-friendly restaurants in advance–kids won’t wait when they are hungry.
- Check out places that mean something to you and tell your kids about it (Nancy used to live in Corona Del Mar so the family went back to her house, toy store, and library as well as the beach near her house).
- Kick Back and Relax! The most important thing you will do on your trip is JUST spend time together.

We talk to Katie Van Dyke, author of Stop Struggling, Start Parenting, about how the little things add up to great Mothering. Then, Tricia shares ideas with us about how to Save the Memories we are making with our children.
Also, Nancy LOVES the Piggy Platter and has used it in her house for the past 3 years. It not only works as a place mat that catches everything–it also serves as a great learning station where kids can draw, learn letters and practice writing. Nancy’s son uses his every day and Nancy credits the Piggy Platter with the ease at which Alex learned to write his letters and spell (in 1st Grade). Besides all that, it keeps the frustration down when the occasional spills occur because the Platter contains the mess so that it doesn’t roll down on to the floor.

Our mothers are the ones who rocked us, raised us, taught us right from wrong, and helped us launch into our own odyssey as moms. So isn’t it fitting that we spend the week before Mother’s Day talking to our own moms and giving them credit where credit is due (for the good and the bad). We talk to our moms and find out where our strengths and fears come from and we discuss what our moms wish that we did as mothers (yes, it could get dicey, but that is part of the fun). When you meet our moms, you will quickly understand why we are the way we are (if it wasn’t clear bef0re). So join us for an hour of mother-daughter conversation!

And remember to send in your “You Know You are a Mom If” statements to win the Circle of Sentiments Necklace.
Check out this totally cute YouTube video created by a friend of ours. He shot kids in our neighborhood for a commercial and this is the long version. It makes you feel good to be a mom! Happy Mother’s Day!

We talk to Laura Lawrence about how to break cleaning down into manageable pieces, the shoes we love and have tested, and signing with our kids–how are things going.
Here is the promised video of Anna walking with the Squeaker Sneakers. I lost her original one (the first day she wore them) by doing the typical accidental recording over. She is still a bit unstable in this video, but you can see how she walks and squeaks. My husband and I LOVE hearing the squeak. It is really cute and comforting to know where she is now that she is mobile. We call it our homing device.
